After Mongul and the Cyborg Superman destroy Hal Jordan’s hometown of Coast City (killing millions), a grief-stricken Hal uses his power ring to recreate the entire city as a light construct. The Guardians of the Universe forbid this personal use of power. Driven mad by loss and anger, Hal snaps and marches toward the Green Lantern home world of Oa to take ultimate power for himself. On his way to Oa, Hal defeats numerous Green Lanterns (including Kilowog and Sinestro), strips them of their rings, and leaves a trail of destruction. Hal reaches the Central Power Battery on Oa, absorbs its massive energy, and transforms into the villain Parallax.
