Guy Gardner, down and out after his fight with Hal Jordan for Sector 2814, attempts to keep crimefighting and cleaning the streets of Times Square from scum like Black Hand's gang. However, being without his ring, he's not as efficient as he'd like. Being sidelined from the Justice League, Guy attempts to convince the New Guardians to follow him and form a new superhero team, but they also kick him from their island.

He eventually meets a hooker called Tiffany, who suggests he become a gun-blazing vigilante. Even though he dismisses the idea at first, he arms himself with an arsenal of weapons. Calling himself "The Gardner," Guy wipes out Black Hand's gang and then decides to go for a bigger game and hunt for Goldface in Las Vegas. However, he gets outnumbered by Goldface's gang, and he escapes from the shootout.

His car gets damaged by a bullet, so he ends stranded in the desert. He hitches a ride on a truck and, after a short nap, he remembers that the Qwardians created Sinestro's ring and the "Anti-Oan" power rings he dealt with recently. So he yells out loud that he needs to go to Qward to get his powers back. He only needs to find the two Qwardians he abandoned on the Poglachi planet. The truck driver deems him nuts and kicks Guy out of the vehicle.

Stranded again, Guy's "Guardian Angel" comes in the form of G'nort. Guy tricks the dumb dog and makes him believe that he can convince the Guardians to make him Hal Jordan's official assistant. G'nort creates a spaceship for him, and Guy takes off immediately.

In space, Guy sets course to the Poglachi planet, but he figures that he can't fight against the Qwardians alone. So he decides to seek help from none other than Lobo. Guy crashlands in his hangout, and when he comes out of the ship, Lobo leaps toward him, ready to rip his "fraggin' head off."
